The Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design with a student body of approximately 800, is the largest institution of its kind in the State of Baden-Württemberg and is a prominent institution in the Federal Republic of Germany.
It is an institution where the Fine Arts and Applied Arts are flourishing side by side. This approach is based on tradition and reflects the academy’s understanding of its own role in education. It is characterized by a more direct interaction with the teaching staff. The outstanding quality and range of equipment available in the workshops allows students to acquire a variety of practical skills under the guidance of a workshop manager. As with all courses in creative subjects, students need to be bold, self-motivated, and show a high degree of initiative.
BA/MA Industrial Design
The Industrial Design Course is located in the ›Werkstattbau‹, which also houses the workshops of the architecture course. ›ID‹ occupies an entire floor, complete with its experimental workshop, a mock-up area, rapid prototyping equipment, computer lab and a small photo studio. This is only a few steps away from the student studios with workspaces shared by MEDes students and Industrial Design Diploma students. The current course is strongly based on a carefully developed methodical approach to industrial design, and has been instrumental in the development of the current high professional quality of German product design. MEDes students can choose each semester between the projects offered by Prof. Uwe Fischer and Prof. Winfried Scheuer, the two professors for Industrial Design. There is a weekly project meeting each, where students, the professor and one assistant discuss the current project. The projects can vary from collaborations with companies to more experimental themes within industrial design.
